The Portsmouth Grammar School Reduce Waste and Reduce Costs with Raphael

Founded in 1732, The Portsmouth Grammar School have had a near-300 year legacy of giving access to transformative education and supporting children to flourish through their spirit, vision and learning.

Key Points

Customer: The Portsmouth Grammar School, Hampshire

Facilities: Multiple washroom facilities servicing staff and students at prestigious school, providing education from ages 2 to 18

Purchase Driver: Cost saving and waste reduction

Previous Product: Centrepull toilet tissue and V Fold hand towel

Raphael Product: VersaTwin 2 ply recycled tissue and Lever Control 2 ply recycled towel

After many years of using a centrepull toilet roll, the school sought the advice of their washroom and janitorial supplier CJS Portsmouth Ltd, to help them in minimising the stub roll waste and product availability issues that they were encountering.

The team proposed the Raphael VersaTwin dispenser, which offers a x10 capacity increase versus their previous product and ensures tissue availability for longer periods. Also featuring an ‘infinity’ twin roll function, the VersaTwin enables rolls to be replaced without the need to waste stubs.

After a comprehensive trial, the results to the school were clear. Cleaning staff saved precious time replenishing dispensers with the increased capacity, and crucially for the school, the infinity paper system delivered significant waste reduction versus the previous tissue product, which the school estimated as around 10-15% per roll.

Cleaning staff have confidence in the long lasting capability of the dispenser, even through busy break periods, and now allows them to focus on other key tasks across the facilities.

The significantly increased case quantity has also delivered other soft savings to the school. The 2 ply VersaTwin tissue has a case quantity of 3,000m, a 224% increase versus the previous product. This has allowed for less frequent deliveries, less pressure on storerooms, less administrative requirement, all contributing to a reduced workload across several school functions.

A spokesperson from the school commented:

“We approached CJS Portsmouth with our shopping list of requirements, and the Raphael range has really exceeded expectation and delivered on all fronts.

The reduced waste and labour have really helped with the efficiency of our cleaning operations, and the significant cost savings have enabled us to allocate funds to other functions throughout the school.

We were also really engaged with the sustainability story of Northwood. Using a recycled product that is fully manufactured in the UK really appealed to us, especially with how this contributes to the Circular Economy. It has real synergy with some of the teachings and values of our school culture.

The Green Loop scheme also helped us to deliver against our environmental targets. Not only were the dispensers installed efficiently, on time, without mess or interruption to our daily activities, but we successfully recycled all of our 200+ dispensers, contributing to our ambition of increasing recycling rates and minimising environmental impact.”
